yes.. . i also think the the title of the book contributes to the theme . which waiting for godot is actually waiting for God to come, even though God does not say exactly when he's coming or give people a set time ... because in the book they are a lot of hints to religion and Christ
That is a good interpretation.. Half of the class believed that too initially. However, Samuel Beckett (the author) when asked if the play were about God, he said, "If I had meant God then i would have said it." Godot rather symbolizes anything referring to hope. He symbolizes redemption, or salvation, or faith. He represents a purpose for why we continue to live despite all the circumstances life gives us. The main theme of the play however mainly refers to the "Waiting" of the title rather than "Godot". The actions and things we choose to do with our life are what is important.
The significance in the title lies within the word "Waiting" as opposed to "Godot." It is the waiting that is important--their actions, dialogue, etc. during this wait that is significant. I think that many people, upon reading the title of the play, assume that the mysterious "Godot" mentioned is the main significance.
Well, seeing as how they were in fact Waiting for Godot within the actual play... the title does represent the main idea of the play - Waiting for Godot... ... From there, symbolism comes into play in the form of Godot. The author himself also said if he wanted people to read "Waiting for GOD" he would have simply put the title "Waiting for GOD"
