I believe that Godot is a symbol for whatever it is that each of us is waiting for to make that change or go on and do something in this life. We don't know if Godot exists as a person but Godot can certainly be taken for that symbol. The fact that he doesn't come is symbolizing that there are things in our life that we are waiting for but never seem to come. It is our responsibility to move forward regardless of 'Godot' coming or not.
Perhaps Godot represents existence--- or rather an existence of meaning. These two characters appear to be waiting for something in their life to happen to give their life, their existence, significance or meaning. Godot may represent 'something' that is to happen to them to make sense of the absurd world these characters live in and to make sense of their lives; a possible desire, velleity, for something to happen. However, as noted, Godot is never going to come. As in reality, one cannot wait for something to happen to give one's life meaning (happiness, purpose, reason to live, etc.)-- one has to create that meaning for themselves. Godot, essentially is nothing. Beckett appears to be criticizing the fact that all we, humans, do is wait incessantly for 'Godot,' but ultimately the process is futile. Of course, one can argue this, such as perhaps we don't just spend the entirety of our lives waiting. Perhaps we may alter the course of our lives and search and create a meaning for ourselves, we may chase our dreams and attempt to fill our aspirations.
I believe that Godot ultimately represents hope and it's consequences. Although we may never know if Godot actually exists or not, we know that he brings Vladimir and Estragon hope for something better, something more than their daily routines and simple lifestyle. His awaited arrival gives them a reason to carry on and continue life as they know it. This faith in Godot's arrival Is what keeps them moving forwards, but unfortunately, time us moving forwards with them too. This brings about the consequences of hope. Because Vladimir and Estragon are dedicated to waiting for Godot, time itself is moving foward without cessation. Vladimir and Estragon sacrifice this time and all of other possible activities that they could be persuing to wait for Godot.

ReplyDeleteIn short, the significance of Mr.Godot is that he is a symbolism of hope.
