is two better than one

In the beginning of the book we are introduce to Estragon and Vladimir then Pozzo and Lucky. Do you think Beckett pairs these charcters for a reason and whats the importance of it?

  1. I think that Beckett paired these characters together for the importance of making the reader think that their is a mysteriously shared understanding between each character that Godot is someone to be waited on and everyone who crosses paths with our two main characters need to know who he is as well. Lucky and Pozzo's pairing is important because of the inverse teacher relationship in which Pozzo is in fact the student and lucky is the teacher, yet the slave at the same time.

  2. Also i think the pairing is significant because each one gives the other a purpose or a role to play in life. And without each other the characters would seem to be lost and very much incomplete as a person.

In agreement with the other comments, I think Beckett does do this for a reason. In fact, Vladmir and Estragon talk about splitting ways and leaving each other a few times but they can never bring themselves to doing. They seem to be more afraid of being left lonely and alone than death itself. This is why they don't follow through with hanging themselves.
