Hey so my question is:

Why does Estragon say that they are "tied" to Godot in Act I?

  1. Estragon says that they are tied to Godot, because that is the only reason they are there. If Didi and Gogo were not waiting for Godot's arrival, they could go anywhere they please, and they could do anything they want. Since they are waiting for him, they are figuratively tied down, or obligated to wait for him.

To begin with think about what Godot represents. Typically when waiting for something or someone one depends on said person to bring something in return. Thus, we see that Vladimir and Estragon have an eternal hope of Godot actually coming. We do not know what Godot will bring or whether he actually exists. However, keep in mind that maybe Godot is not so significant as is the waiting Vladimir and Estragon are "tied" to do. Thus, the question is begged are they actually tied to wait for godot or are their hope and imaginations compelling them to feel the need to wait? Translating this to humanity- human beings have to learn to wait and our hope that something better might come compells us to wait. So is it the gratification at the end of our waiting that "ties" us to wait or is it our hope that "ties" us to wait?

They feel as though they are obligated to wait for Godot. Short, simple, and to the point.

Estragon say that they are "tied" to Godot because their lives are revolving around Godot. They have to stay in that one place because they do not want to miss the opportunity to see Godot.
