What was the meaning behind Lucky's speech , were those words of significance ? Or senseless babble of a battered man??

  1. Lucky's speech is a combination of significance and absurdity. There are obvious parts in the speech were its just babble. But, the words do mean something. The use of "qua" which is translated in latin to mean in the capacity of, or as being. A word like that is more complex and his constant use of it shows his higher level of intelligence; you come to understand how he used to be Pozzo's teacher. Besides "qua" showing his intelligence, the use of other terms is made up of all sexual connotation. Im not completly sure why they are sexual but it also contributes to his clear intelligence. Essentially, Lucky's speech is to show intelligence but also show his lack of connection to the world. He is lost in his own intelligence and is forced to stay in a box of turning his genius on and off.

  2. Like Lila said, Lucky's speech was both significant and absurb, but more importantly the speech was symbolic. The speech as a whole was very unorganized and did not make sense, but in between the nonsense their were pockets of intellegence. This signifys the fact that at one point Lucky was intelligent, but after many years he has lost it thus speaking of nonsense. This could also signify Beckett's belief of absurbity in the way humans strive to be and sound intelligent.

  4. Lucky's speech is his attempt to make sense of the world. His intelligence (or attempt at intelligence) masks his confusion/lack of "knowing." Lucky's speech also represents the purest form of absurdism. Absurdism is when one attempts to make sense of a world that is unintelligible.

  5. If you take many of the "absurd" words from the speech, it actually makes sense and doesn't sound like he's just talking about "nothing." Because he was once Pozzo's teacher it is obvious that he is/was intelligent but because he's been controlled by pozzo for so long that he wasn't able to express himself. His speech may be depicting all the thoughts he's kept for so long but sound so absurd because he isn't able to organize them properly. Another possibility is that it is showing how everything around us and everything we try to achieve really is absurd.
