Those were his boots. He just wants to create his own entertainment. His brain is playing tricks on him. He is so used to the same thing everyday that he wanted to see and notice something different. He wanted to believe that those weren't his boots because he wanted to believe that there was someone else with them that could have left those boots there. This situation is similar to how they notice that the tree wasn't the same, a few leafs had grown (they were noticing something new that hadn't always been there.)
They are definitely his boots. He has a horrible memory and the fact that he thinks they are someone else's adds to the comedic aspect of the play. He feels like the boots being replaced is more reasonable than believing that they are his. Thus giving it comedy. It also helps understand absurdity...because his belief that they are not his boots is in fact absurd.
No, they were his boots. The swelling of his feet probably went down so it seemed like they were not his because they fit so easily.
