Was it common for people to hang themselves out of boredom during this time?

No one is certain during what time this play is set in. That's the incredible part about the play--- one can observe the character's clothing and their location and yet can place any time during which this play sets in. No object truly reveals the time.

  2. As humans we all some time in our lives have thought of suicide. In the play Beckett reveals that to the reader and it’s a good time pass don’t you think so Didi and Gogo thought so. The only thing that stopped them was the fact that one of them will be left alone which goes into another theme within the play humans cant stand being alone.

No. At least, I don't think so.
Beckett further accentuated the theme of Existentialism through incorporating the thought of suicide by these characters. In class we talked about the renowned philosopher Camus and his existentialist principals. Camus thought suicide was cowardly and that it took a kind of courage to live in the face of death. Thus, by having these characters consider suicide we are viewing their cowardly side but we also veiw the fact that they have the courage to live facing death.

  4. Well, you see, to hang oneself out of boredom would take an extreme amount of personal courage And willpower. The body is made in a way that killing yourself would be hard - The body does not allow you to easily kill yourself. However, since the play does not have a set time or date, I cannnot with any form of accuracy say that it was common practice to hang oneself out of boredom during whatever time the play was taking place. In today's society, hanging oneself I would argue is not the most common form of suicide. From an existentialist point of view, they probably had much reason to hang themselves as they did not have anything to live for. However, it could also be argued that they were living for each other as neither could part one another for more than 5 seconds.
An awkward bromance if you ask me.

On a more serious note, it is indeed not common practice to hang oneself out of boredom.

It was not out of boredom they were just trying to find a way to pass the time. It was just another thing for them to consider while the time and days were going on.

  6. I don't think the time of the play really matters. They spoke about hanging themselves in a rhetorical sense. They mentioned hanging themselves merely out of boredom.

  7. I'm not exactly sure about whether it was common then or not but the significance of them proposing to hang themselves was not simply because they "wanted to hang themselves". They did not necessarily want to die, they just wanted something to do-- they wanted to pass the time. They felt that there was no purpose in their existence because they are tired of waiting for something to happen (there is safety in passivity). It gives a sense of existentialism in the fact that it seems it'd be better to just die (because we are all going to die anyway) and speed up the process; however they realize that if one were to die and leave the other alone that would be even worse. Death is bearable; loneliness is not.
